Best Techniques for Setting your Makeup

When it comes to keeping your face in place, there are a number of techniques used by both makeup professionals and beginners alike to make sure you are set for the day! In this blog, we’ll talk you through the individual terms you might have heard, and the tips for setting your makeup so you can find what will work best for you.

Baking: This term is used for packing on a good amount of loose powder onto an area that you want to appear brighter than the rest of your face. This would usually be the parts of your face that the light naturally hits, such as under your eyes, your chin or the center of your forehead or jawline. After application, you leave the powder on your face for 5-10 mins allowing it to “bake”, which essentially means the heat from your face is setting the foundation in place and is taking in the pigment from the slightly lighter loose powder.

Translucent Powder: This powder seems like a brilliant idea BUT you have to be very careful when using a translucent powder! Due to its light pigment, which sometimes looks white in compact powders, it may cause flashback in photos or videos. Also, due to its transparency it’s not going to add any coverage to your face but it does ensure that your foundation is locked in place all day!

Setting Powder: If your skin type is combination or oily, try use a light dusting of our LA Girl Cosmetics Pro Face HD powder before using a setting spray. If you have a normal skin type but want your makeup to last hours (e.g. if you got your makeup done at lunch, and you want it to look it’s best around 6pm) setting powder will prolong the wear of your makeup and your natural oils will peek through after a few hours so you won’t have a completely matte look. You can always touch up throughout the day or night too, however, to ensure a matte finish if that’s what you prefer!

Setting Spray: This is our personal favourite technique to set your makeup in place! We would always recommend to apply setting spray after any of the above methods just to ensure the longevity of the makeup. Our Milani Make It Last Setting Spray is perfect for any skin tone and can also be sprayed before makeup as a primer – who doesn’t love a 2-in-1 product? We also have the Milani Make It Dewy Setting Spray which is perfect for dry skin to bring moisture back into the face or for a normal skin type that wants that extra glow!
